Food is not just food: Syria

Rasha and Mohammed from Sarpsborg serve a Syrian feast with lamb and vegetables, squash in yogurt, baba ghanouj, stuffed vine leaves and much more.

Healthy tips

Clinical nutritionist Insaf Zerouga offers the following tips to Rasha and Mohammed:

  • There is much that is healthy about Syrian food, such as lentils and chickpeas, and vegetables and fruit.
  • Making the food from scratch often makes the food healthier, because you avoid, among other things, the added sugar, salt and preservatives that are often found in ready-made food.
  • Traditional Syrian food contains a lot of fat and it is not that healthy. Use plant-based oils such as olive or canola oil instead of butter, and limit deep-frying to special occasions.
  • Replacing some meat with fish is healthy for the body and good for the environment.
