Food is not just food: Poland

We meet Dominik, Kasia and daughter Maria from Bøler in Oslo. They serve Polish dinner with pickled cucumber soup, breaded cutlets and traditional cake for dessert. Watch the film and try the recipes here.

Healthy tips

Clinical nutritionist Insaf Zerouga gives this advice to Dominik and Kasia:

  • There is a lot of meat in Polish food. Choose lean unprocessed meat, and cut away visible fat.
  • Chicken is lean and is a good choice. But also eat fish or vegetarian a few days a week.
  • Use whole grain varieties of rice or pasta if you can – these are healthier and more filling.
  • Soup is good as a starter because it fills you up, without containing so many calories. But avoid adding too much oil, butter and fatty dairy products.
  • Make the food from scratch, then you have more control over the contents.
  • It is fine to enjoy cake occasionally. On the Diabetes Association recipe pages you will find many good desserts with little sugar and fat.
